From Junior Hockey to the Columbus Blue Jackets Dev Camp: Brandan Young's Journey Is Proof There Isn't Just One Path

Every hockey player grows up with the same dream earning an opportunity to play professional hockey. While many players follow the traditional route through major junior or NCAA Division I hockey, not every journey looks the same.

For defenseman Brandan Young, the road has been anything but conventional.

Instead of taking the path most players expect, Young continued chasing his dream wherever the opportunity led him. That determination eventually took him overseas to Poland which, this summer, earned him an invitation to the Columbus Blue Jackets Rookie Development camp. This is a journey that proves hard work and perseverance can open doors, no matter where you play.

Young spent his junior career developing into a dependable two-way defenseman. Standing 6-foot-2 and over 210 pounds, he built his game around being difficult to play against while continuing to improve his skating and ability to move the puck. Like every player trying to reach the next level, nothing came easy. Every season brought new challenges, tougher competition, and another opportunity to prove himself.

When his junior career came to an end, Young wasn't ready to stop chasing his dream. Instead of seeing fewer opportunities, he found a new one.

Young made the decision to continue both his education and hockey career in Poland, joining Opole University in the European University Hockey League (EUHL). Moving halfway across the world isn't something many players are willing to do. It meant adjusting to a new country, a new culture, and a different style of hockey. For Young, it was another chance to keep getting better. While many players believe they have to stay in North America to get noticed, Young showed that good players can be found anywhere. He continued working on his game every day, becoming a more complete defenseman while gaining valuable experience playing internationally. That commitment eventually paid off.

This summer, Young received an invitation to the Columbus Blue Jackets Rookie Development Camp, giving him the chance to skate alongside NHL draft picks, signed prospects, and some of the organization's top young talent. For an undrafted player, earning an NHL camp invitation is a major accomplishment. It means an NHL organization has taken notice and wants to see what you can do against elite competition. While a development camp isn't a contract, it's an opportunity and opportunities are earned.

Young's story is a great reminder for young hockey players that there isn't one perfect path to success. Every player develops at a different pace, and every career looks a little different. Some players stay close to home, while others have to travel across the world to find the next step. What matters most is continuing to improve and being ready when an opportunity comes.

Brandan Young never stopped betting on himself. From junior hockey to collegiate hockey in Poland, and now onto the ice with the Columbus Blue Jackets, his journey is proof that persistence, patience, and a willingness to take a different path can lead to incredible opportunities.

His story is still being written, but one thing is already clear sometimes the road less traveled leads exactly where you're meant to be.
